Shishu Sarothi – A home for the needy

WHAT THEHEEBEE SAYS ABOUT SHISHU SAROTHI:

Shishu Sarothi

I have come across many kind-hearted people and organizations who work had to make a difference for the underprivileged. My heart beats with respect for them and my hand salutes them a thousand times. One such institute that I recently came across is Shishu Sarothi.

About Shishu Sarothi:

Established in 1987, Shishu Sarothi is a leading not-for-profit organization working with a proven track record in the area of early intervention and rehabilitation, education, livelihoods, advocacy, and awareness as well as protection of rights and legal aid for children and persons with disabilities in North East India.

Shishu Sarothi had a modest start in the year 1987 as they started operating from a one-room set up in one of the children’s grandparents’ home. With a rock-solid commitment of the founders, volunteers, students, and parents, they grew their service offerings to more number of children and could settle down at their own premises in the year 1997. By now Shishu Sarothi with its team of dedicated staff had evolved into a leading regional level institution offering services for children with cerebral palsy, comprehensive training programs and associated multiple disabilities and upholding rights of persons with disabilities.

Service offerings by Shishu Sarothi:

By God’s grace and constant efforts of the people, today Shishu Sarothi has become a Zonal Coordination Committee (ZCC) for the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), and is a State Nodal Agency Centre for the National Trust in addition to being an active member of the Disability Rights Group and other national level advocacy bodies.

Success Stories:

I was truly touched by the success stories of Shishu Sarothi. I want to share one success story of Ms. Debotri Dutta born on 22nd July 2002 and hails from Guwahati.

Shishu Sarothi

Miss Debotri is the eldest daughter of Mr. Subhajit Dutta and Mrs. Gayatri Dutta. She has a younger sister. Debotri has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (Spastic Diplegic). Initially, when she came to Shishu Sarothi she could not walk and would speak only in few monotonous words. Parents were also not well acquainted with their child’s disability and were vexed about the possible intervention for the child. The parents were referred to counseling unit where few sessions were provided to the parents and were given psycho-education about the child’s disability and measures to train the child to enhance her developmental skills.

Presently she is enrolled in Functional Unit (F.U) as well as is also obtaining computer skills from ICT lab. The child is gradually developing in all the aspects of developmental skills. In the F.U the child is being given pre-vocational training at the center. Pre-vocational training provides basic training on self-help skills to the children to lead an independent life. Debotri knows beading and block printing. She could comprehend and analyze simple instructions. She can now write & type the names of her parents in the computer and can do the basic calculation using a calculator and is aware of monetary value (e.g 10 & 20 rupees) with basic knowledge about general awareness. The child takes active participation in all the events( sports and cultural programme) organized in and out the center. The family is also showing interest and is supporting her. This has been possible due to the constant support is given by the counseling unit of Shishu Sarothi.

Appeal for donation:

The underprivileged needs more support from such organizations and these organizations can only do by our generous support in terms of volunteering in their activities and through donations. I sincerely request all my readers to please support them by kind-hearted donations at this link.
