WHAT THEHEEBEE SAYS ABOUT THE BOOK “A CASE OF EXPLODING MANGOES”:
Book: A Case of Exploding Mangoes
Author: Mohammed Hanif
Publisher: Random House India
Cost: INR, 250.00
Best Seller: The Indian and Pakistani Bestseller
The plot of the story revolves around the circumstances that led to the killing of Pakistan’s President Zia ul-Haq in August 1988, as he gets into the presidential plane, Pak One. The plane explodes midway. There are multiple suspects behind this killing – The army generals growing old waiting for their promotion? The CIA? The ISI? The RAW? Or Ali Shigri, a junior officer at the military academy whose father, a whiskey-swilling jihadi colonel, has been murdered by the army?
I purchased this book in 2013 but after that, I never got time to read it. Recently I was looking into my collection and picked up this book.
I had in past read two books related to Pakistan and both were non-fiction. When I read the blurb of this book I felt that it might also be a non-fiction around the circumstances of the tragic death of Pakistan’s one of the very popular dictators. However, it turned out to be a completely different theme.
I need to say that I enjoyed the journey of the book. The end of the book disappointed me little as I was expecting it to be a realistic end rather than a fiction. Yet the overall journey of 364 pages was worth.
As it is mentioned in the book – In “A Case of Exploding Mangoes”, Mohammed Hanif has torn into the corruption of the army and General Zia’s dictatorship. He has in-depth taken the world through the minutes and the depths of the state of affairs prevailing in the country during the time he wrote the book.
I am highly appreciative of the – simple yet effective language used in the book, witty and humorous encounters at various locations, the suspense that the book creates till the end and the stickiness that makes you read the book once you pick it up.
My rating: 3.5/5 (loses some point as the end was not as per my expectation)
